Behavioral ethology is a fundamental tool for addressing the coexistence of predators and livestock. It provides a better understanding of predation behaviors, such as surplus killing, as well as the interactions between wolves, herds, and protective measures, particularly guard dogs. Thanks to night vision, it is possible to observe what is actually happening in the field rather than just imagining it. Understanding how wolves react to protective measures allows us to put the wolf back at the center of the equation when it comes to livestock protection.

Ethology is also essential for monitoring a social species. Video traps help reconstruct part of the wolves’ lives: social relationships, group composition, reproduction, movements, and individual behaviors. It also serves as a bridge between scientific knowledge and pastoral expertise. The speaker will illustrate his points with numerous field footage clips and share his experiences as an ethologist.

Free event.
