Michel Mouze

What better way to understand the biophysics of gliding flight in large birds of prey than to experience it for yourself?

This is the story of Michel Mouze, an associate professor of animal biology at the University of Lille, who discovered free flight via hang gliding in the 1980s. By taking to the skies in this way, he was able to gain firsthand insight into the possibilities offered by this mode of travel, as well as the many challenges that must be overcome to glide successfully for extended periods. This led him to turn his attention to the study of the extraordinary aerial feats of griffon vultures, whose reintroduction—then underway in the Jonte Gorges, between Lozère and Aveyron—would prove to be a resounding success. The result is a captivating and vivid account that immerses the reader in the physiological and aerodynamic mechanics of gliding flight—from its evolution over millions of years to the daily life of a griffon vulture—with each phase of flight analyzed in minute detail.

Philippe Chatelain

An aerospace researcher, lecturer, space enthusiast, and glider pilot, Philippe Chatelain is dedicated to sharing his passions with his students and fellow researchers through interdisciplinary projects and topics that pique his curiosity. Among his recent initiatives in science outreach are gliding seminars for undergraduate students and the development of an affordable, glider-based experimental weightless test bed.
