Learning outcomes

The research project consists in offering the student an initiation to scientific research of the academic type in one of the units of the physics department of the University of Namur. At the end of the course, the student will be able to undertake and finalise a scientific work as part of his or her dissertation, and will also have acquired the skills to write and present it orally.

Goals

The aim is to equip students with the knowledge and skills essential for successfully carrying out, during the second year of the Master’s programme, the research work involved in producing their final dissertation. This research project will make the best possible use of the knowledge and skills developed during the Scientific Communication module.

Admission to the SPHYM122 module will be assessed by the project supervisor on the basis of relevant course marks relating to the project topic. Furthermore, successful completion of the modules SPHYB207 (General Physics Practical Work), SPHYB220 (Independent Laboratory Work) and SPHYB315 (General Physics Practical Work) is essential for enrolment on the SPHYM122 module.

Finally, for a ‘Physics and Data’ project, successful completion of the modules SPHYB128 (Programming Methods in Physics) and SPHYB208 (Programming) is also essential.

Content

The starting point for this research will be a problem posed by a teacher, which may be extended by a thesis to be undertaken in M2.

Teaching methods

This course, intended for first year students of the Master in Physical Sciences, mobilises several teaching methodologies: expositive but also participative (during lectures and seminars).

Assessment method

The research project will be assessed on the basis of:

  • The submission of a written report

  • An oral presentation of the research topic to an examination board
