At the end of this course, students will be able to:
describe and explain the main molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in multidrug resistance in cancer cells;
describe and explain the role of the tumor microenvironment in multidrug resistance in cancer cells;
identify and characterize the main molecular targets that may be exploited to prevent or overcome multidrug resistance;
critically evaluate the potential, limitations, and prospects of novel therapeutic approaches to overcome resistance to anticancer treatments.
This course aims to deepen students’ understanding of the mechanisms underlying multidrug resistance in oncology and its impact on the efficacy of anticancer treatments. It explores the role of molecular and cellular mechanisms, as well as the tumor microenvironment, in the development and persistence of resistance. The course also presents key molecular targets and innovative therapeutic strategies aimed at preventing or overcoming multidrug resistance, while fostering a critical understanding of current advances, limitations, and future perspectives in this field.
The course begins with an overview of the mechanisms underlying multidrug resistance in oncology, highlighting their pleiotropic nature and the complexity of the interactions between molecular and cellular mechanisms and the tumor microenvironment. This introduction provides a framework for understanding the different mechanisms of resistance and their impact on the efficacy of anticancer treatments. A number of key resistance mechanisms are then explored in greater depth, focusing on their molecular and cellular basis, their interactions with the tumor microenvironment, and the main molecular targets associated with these mechanisms. Teaching relies primarily on the critical analysis of research articles and scientific reviews, allowing students to relate theoretical concepts to recent experimental findings and to examine innovative therapeutic strategies developed to prevent or overcome treatment resistance. Particular emphasis is placed on the advances, limitations, and future perspectives of these approaches, with the aim of developing a critical understanding of the current challenges and emerging strategies in multidrug resistance in oncology.
