Sodium based dual ion batteries are expected to be the next generation of commercial batteries because of their higher energy density and lower cost than traditional lithium ion batteries. The design of the electrode material is critical because the anions will insert into the cathode when the cations insert into the anode. The large size of anions leads to dramatic volume expansion and even pulverization of cathode materials, thus resulting in poor cycling performance. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to design sodium based dual ion batteries with excellent cycling performance through materials modification or designing novel materials.
