Ecosystems are continuously exposed to a variety of environmental changes. We examine how these changes alter the mechanisms sustaining species coexistence, and what are the implications of such alterations at higher levels of biological organisation.
Specifically, we want to understand how environmental changes shape biodiversity and ecosystem function, as well as the relationship between these two variables to understand when and how initial levels of biodiversity offer ecosystems the capacity to resist environmental change effects.
We approach these questions combining theoretical ecology, mathematical modelling, microcosm experiments, and (re-)analyses of existing experimental and field data.
Our study systems include freshwater and marine phytoplankton competing for common resources, but we also consider food-webs representing complex species networks.
Federik De Laender's NARC fellowship started on 1 October 2018 and finishes on 30 September 2020.
